Madison Square Garden got to witness some incredible moments in the Octagon which included wicked knockouts and some action-packed fights. Here is what happened at UFC 295.
early prelims
Veronica Hardy vs Eduarda Moura (Women's Flyweight Bout) - Moura wins via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).
Moura managed to get some redemption in New York after securing an unanimous decision win. Both women had a close contest when they were striking on the feet, but Ronda made the fight difficult for Hardy when they went to the ground as that was the main factor that would give the Brazilian the win. Moura will be aiming to start her second winning streak in MMA which will help her rise up the Flyweight division.
Bassil Hafez vs Oban Elliott (Welterweight Bout) - Elliott wins via KO (R3, 0:40).
Elliott increases his winning streak to eight after a vicious knockout win over Hafez. The Welsh Gangster and his opponent had a quiet first two rounds, but the beginning of the third round would deliver when a wicked overhand right punch would knock Hafez down, before a few punches would see the Stroud-born fighter come out victorious. Elliott is slowly becoming a big prospect in the Welterweight division and it may not be long until see him contest for the 170-pound rankings.
Mickey Gall vs Ramiz Brahimaj (Welterweight Bout) - Brahimaj wins via KO (R1, 2:55).
Brahimaj earned his first knockout win of his MMA career after defeating Gall in the first round. A terrific three-punch combination would send Gall down to the ground, before a couple of punches would see the bout come to an end. After claiming redemption in MSG, Brahimaj will have his third chance to get a second consecutive win in the UFC
preliminary card
Marcin Tybura vs Jhonata Diniz (Heavyweight Bout) - Tybura wins via TKO [Doctor Stoppage] (R2, 5:00).
Tybura became the first fighter to defeat Diniz after the doctor advised the referee to stop the fight due to multiple cuts on the face from the Brazilian. The fight would be close on the feet, but on the ground Tybura would be better as he delivered some slicing elbows to his opponent, leaving significant damage. The #9 Heavyweight contender goes back to winning ways after maintaining his ranking and will want to face tougher competition.
David Onama vs Roberto Romero (Lightweight Bout) - Onama wins via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
Onama earned a decision win over Romero in a great back-and-forth battle, putting him on a three-fight winning streak. The first round would be one of the most entertaining of the year as both Onama and Romero would knock down each other, but Onama would have more energy for the second and third round which would lead him to victory. The Ugandan fighter has won five of his seven UFC fights as he tries to close in on the 155-pound rankings.
Jim Miller vs Damon Jackson (Lightweight Bout) - Miller wins via Guillotine Choke (R1, 2:44).
Miller made his 45th appearance in the UFC, and it would be a spectacular one when he submitted Jackson in the first round. The fight would go smoothly for both men on the feet, before a takedown attempt from Jackson would be a big mistake as A-10 locked in a Guillotine Choke which would soon stop the Welterweight battle. Miller has no plans of retiring anytime soon as he aims to extend his record for the most wins and fights in the organisation.
Jonathan Martinez vs Marcus McGhee (Bantamweight Bout) - McGhee wins via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
McGhee lost his 100% finish rate in MMA, but still got the win as he claimed his first unanimous decision victory of his career. The first two rounds saw The Maniac dominate with punches, but struggled in the third round after receiving some stinging leg kicks from Martinez. The Detroit-born fighter will most likely enter the Bantamweight rankings after defeating the #13 contender as he sets his sights on continuing to progress.
main card
Mauricio Ruffy vs James Llontop (Catchweight Bout) - Ruffy wins via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Ruffy earned his first decision win in MMA after going three rounds with James Llontop. Both men kept the fight standing up as despite Llontop contesting and putting the pressure on, Ruffy threw the more bigger shots, especially when he knocked down the Peruvian in the second round. Currently on a six-fight winning streak, the Brazilian continues to carry his success and may have an opportunity to face a ranked opponent in the Lightweight division.
Viviane Araujo vs Karine Silva (Women's Flyweight Bout) - Araujo wins via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Araujo got back in the win column at UFC 309 after an unanimous decision win over Silva. Silva took control of the first round, but as the fight went on, Vivi turned it around on both the feet and ground as her experience in the organisation paid off. The #9 Flyweight contender maintains her ranking as she continues to stay in the top 10 of the 125-pound division.
Bo Nickal vs Paul Craig (Middleweight Bout) - Nickal wins via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
Nickal earned his first decision win in his MMA career after going the distance with Craig, despite getting a bad reaction from the fans after the fight. The Rifle-born mixed martial artist kept the fight on the feet for three rounds, hitting the bigger strikes and stunning the Scotsman in the third round. Nickal still remains undefeated and after beating an experienced fighter in the organisation, he will be hoping to make his way towards the Middleweight rankings.
Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler (Lightweight Bout) - Oliveira wins via Unanimous Decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-45).
Oliveira redeemed himself at MSG after a fiery five-rounder with Chandler went to the judges scorecards. The first four rounds were completely dominated by Do Bronxs as he tried to submit the American, while also giving him trouble standing up, but almost suffered a late scare in the final round as Chandler was throwing bombs as his only way of winning the fight. The #2 Lightweight contender will be hoping to face the winner of the 155-pound title bout between Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan.
Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic (Heavyweight Title Bout) - Jones wins via TKO (R3, 4:29).
Jones remained as the King of the Heavyweights after stopping Miocic in the third round. Miocic struggled to get into the fight despite pouring pressure as Jones would land some brutal body shots, along with a vicious ground and pound in the first round, before putting the former Heavyweight Champion away with a spinning back kick to the body and a couple of ground strikes to finish the fight. It is unclear who is next for Bones, but most of the MMA community are hoping he will face interim champion, Tom Aspinall, as it may be the toughest test of his career.
