The Kaseya Center had the privilege of hosting what was arguably the best UFC event of the year as Miami fans' expectations definitely exceeded. Here is everything that happened at UFC 314.
early prelims
Nora Cornolle vs Hailey Cowan (Women's Bantamweight Bout) - Cornolle wins via Rear-Naked Choke (R2, 1:52).
Cornolle was the first of many in this event to claim redemption as after a split decision loss in her last bout, she managed to earn a second-round submission win over Cowan. The French fighter struggled on the ground in the first round, but after taking the back of Cowan in the second, the bout would soon come to a stop. With three wins in four UFC fights, Cornolle could be close to a position in the Bantamweight rankings.
Tresean Gore vs Marco Tulio (Middleweight Bout) - Tulio wins via TKO (R2, 3:16).
Tulio increased his winning streak to 10 after securing a second-round TKO win over Gore, making it his fourth consecutive knockout victory. The first round could only be described as wild as Tulio hurt Gore on multiple occasions, while receiving a few stunning shots himself, but eventually after some more gruelling strikes the Brazilian would claim the knockout win. Matuto has looked unstoppable and after such a convincing win at UFC 314, he will be seen as an eye-catching prospect in the Middleweight division.
Sumudaerji vs Mitch Raposo (Flyweight Bout) - Sumudaerji wins via Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29).
Sumudaerji got back to winning ways after doing just enough to secure a split decision win over Mitch Raposo. The Tibetan Eagle had more success on the feet as he used his reach advantage very well and despite being taken down by Raposo six times, the Chinese fighter was never in any real trouble. After snapping his three-fight losing streak, Sumudaerji will be aiming to claim a positive record in the UFC as he's now 4-4.
Sedriques Dumas vs Michal Oleksiejczuk (Middleweight Bout) - Oleksiejczuk wins via TKO (R1, 2:49).
Oleksiejczuk was the second man to redeem his three-fight losing streak with a first-round TKO win over Dumas, making it his 15th knockout win. The Leczna-born fighter caught the American off balance and knocked him down before some brutal elbow strikes on the ground and pound gave the referee no choice but to stop the fight. Oleksiejczuk has face some recognisable opponents who have been tough competition as he still plans to showcase what he's made of.
preliminary card
Darren Elkins vs Julian Erosa (Featherweight Bout) - Erosa wins via TKO (R1, 4:15).
Erosa continues to shine with another first-round finish after defeating Elkins by TKO, earning 26 stoppage wins out of 31 triumphs in MMA. Juicy J looked like the stronger fighter both on the feet and ground as a big upkick stunned Elkins, leaving him unable to recover and suffer a loss in the opening round. Erosa has equalled his highest win streak in the UFC as he will hope to be victorious in his next bout to show that he really is in his prime.
Jim Miller vs Chase Hooper (Lightweight Bout) - Hooper wins via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).
Hooper made it five straight wins after going the distance with Miller to win by unanimous decision. Both The Dream and A-10 battled in a grappling match for three rounds as there was a possibility that the fight could stop by submission, but the size of Hooper proved to be an advantage which is what led him to win the bout. The Washington-born fighter continues to be a promising prospect in the Lightweight division as it may not be long until he finds his way in the 155-pound rankings.
Yan Xiaonan vs Virna Jandiroba (Women's Strawweight Bout) - Jandiroba wins via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
Jandiroba increase her winning streak to five as an unanimous decision victory over Yan Xiaonan puts her as the #1 contender in the Strawweight rankings. The Brazilian was dominant on the ground and came close to submitting Xiaonan with an Armbar twice as she controlled most of the fight. With this matchup being a title eliminator, Jandiroba will most likely face Zhang Weili next for the title as she tries to dethrone one of the toughest female fighters in MMA history.
Dan Ige vs Sean Woodson (Featherweight Bout) - Ige wins via TKO (R3, 1:12).
Despite a large height and reach disadvantage, Ige was victorious after stopping Woodson in the third round by TKO. The first two rounds were very close to score, bit a wicked left hand and some follow up shots from 50k meant that the fight would not go to the judges scorecards as the Hawaiin claimed redemption. Ige maintains his #15 Featherweight ranking and will hope to face a contender in his next bout as he gradually becomes a bigger fan-favourite.
main card
Nikita Krylov vs Dominick Reyes (Light Heavyweight Bout) - Reyes wins via KO (R1, 2:24).
Reyes' redemption arc continues to grow after a magnificent first-round knockout win over Krylov, making it 10 KO/TKO wins in his MMA career. The Devastator threw a counter left punch which sent the Ukrainian crashing down, a very similar style to Conor McGregor when he knocked out Jose Aldo at UFC 194. The #8 Light Heavyweight contender is now on a three-fight winning streak and one more victory could put him in title contention.
Bryce Mitchell vs Jean Silva (Featherweight Bout) - Silva wins via Ninja Choke (R2, 3:52).
Silva earned a very comfortable win when he submitted Mitchell in the second round to become a ranked Featherweight. The Brazilian almost submitted Thug Nasty twice in the first round, but after a knockdown and a tight Ninja Choke in the second round, the fight was bound to end. Silva currently stands on 13 consecutive victories and with such an impressive win, fans believe that he will be a future champion in the 145-pound division.
Yair Rodriguez vs Patricio Pitbull (Featherweight Bout) - Rodriguez wins via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
Rodriguez placed himself back in the win column after going to the judges scorecards to win by unanimous decision against Pitbull. El Pantera was more active on the feet which meant that the UFC debutant couldn't get into his groove, plus, the Mexican knocked down Pitbull in the third to convince the judges on their decision. Rodriguez will most likely want to face either Volkanovski or Lopes next as one option is for a title, whilst the other is to end a heated rivalry.
Michael Chandler vs Paddy Pimblett (Lightweight Bout) - Pimblett wins via TKO (R3, 3:03),
Pimblett continues to rise and earns the biggest win of his MMA career after stopping Chandler by TKO in the third round. The Baddy outsmarted Chandler both on the feet and ground as the American struggled to pose a big threat, especially when he was on the ground as Pimblett would stop the fight with a nasty ground and pound. The Liverpool fighter believes he is one fight away from a title shot which most of the MMA community agree with as he aims to defeat a ranked opponent in the top five in his next battle.
Alexander Volkanovski vs Diego Lopes (Featherweight Title Bout) - Volkanovski wins via Unanimous Decision (48-47, 49-46, 49-46).
Volkanovski regained the Featherweight throne after a terrific five-round war against Lopes saw the Australian succeed on the judges scorecards. The Great was more active on the feet as well as trying to change levels at any unexpected moment, and despite being knocked down in the second round, it was clear that he had done enough to win the fight. The two-time UFC Featherweight Champion will be considering who is first title defence will be in his second reign as he's now just one Featherweight title win away from Jose Aldo's record of eight.
