The Milan Derby that secures a Champions League final spot - match preview

Published on 16 May 2023 at 13:00

One of the biggest derby's in the world takes place tonight with bigger consequences than usual. Inter Milan face their rivals AC Milan in the 'Derby della Madonnina' with this one earning them a spot in the 2023 Champions League final. Inter Milan are currently 2-0 up on aggregate against AC giving them a strong lead going into tonight's game at the San Siro - however I can't see Pioli's men going into the semi final without showing some fight. Let's look at both team's ahead of tonight's game...

Inter Milan

The ex Roma duo Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Edin Dzeko have given Inzaghi's side the lead from the first leg and great headstart going into the second. The team in blue and black will be confident that they will progress to the final after tonight's fixture and their recent form will increase that. Inter Milan have now defeated AC three times this campaign - once in the Supercoppa and twice in the league. They're also five points above their opponents with only three games remaining - Inter's chances of a place at Istanbul are looking very strong.

In my opinion Inter Milan's experienced squad, with an average age of 29.6, and a two goal deficit will be the difference tonight. Furthermore Romelu Lukaku also scored twice at the weekend versus Sassuolu in their 4-2 win and his natural instinct could be a great option if they find themselves in jeopardy.

Inter Milan's injury list:

Joaquin Correa

Milan Skriniar

Predicted line up:

Onana; Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Martinez, Dzeko

AC Milan

After a very disappointing start in the first leg the Rossoneri have their work cut out tonight. Not only are they two nil down but they are also on the back of some very mediocre form, of recent times there has been no real consistency and this is also likely to damage them again. Stefano Pioli's men will be hoping for some luck and maybe reverse the roles going into a potential final at Istanbul - we all know how that went for them. If Rafael Leao feature's tonight this could potentially be the difference for AC Milan and provide them with some more pace and flair - although his injury could hinder him in terms of fitness and sharpness. But in my opinion he could be the game changer. However like I have mentioned prior I can't see AC Milan being able to resurrect their semi-final tie although we all know anything can happen in the Champions League.
