In Scottish football, we were once accustomed to seeing the league title be won by a goal or a point. However, this hasn’t been the case since the 2010/11 season, where Rangers edged it against their city rivals by a point. However, with only two points separating the sides heading towards the business end of the season, there is a real impression that there is a proper, old-school title race going on, north of the border.
Today, the pendulum has swung in favour of Rangers, as Philippe Clement’s men reached the top of the table for the first time this season after beating St Johnstone 3-0 at McDiarmid Park.
The Belgian has been a breath of a fresh air at Ibrox since replacing Michael Beale in October last year. Since his arrival, Rangers have only lost one game domestically and have also performed better on the European stage, topping their group in the Europa League. To add to this, Clement steered Rangers to their first League Cup in over a decade, following victory over Aberdeen in the final.

As for Celtic, they look to be a club in disarray at the moment. The Hoops’ poor run of form continued over the weekend, as once again they dropped points to Kilmarnock, following a late equaliser from David Watson. The Ayrshire side are proving to be a real thorn in the side of Brendan Rodgers this season.
After the match, fans expressed their frustration with the board, particularly the Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, who has been an unpopular figure at Celtic Park since returning to the club last year.

On the 30th September 2023, Rangers were embarrassed at home to Aberdeen after a 3-1 defeat that sent Celtic seven points clear, only seven games into the season. After this defeat, even the most die hard of Rangers fans would admit that a title challenge would be unlikely. Six months later and it looks as if it could be The Gers that are in the ascendancy.
