Players Championship 18 Results: Damon Heta Too Hot To Handle In Milton Keynes

Published on 22 August 2024 at 08:30

Australian No.1 Damon Heta claimed his second Pro Tour title of the year after winning Players Championship 18 in Milton Keynes on Wednesday.

Heta's run almost never got going as he had to survive a last leg decider over Rowby-John Rodriguez to progress 6-5: a scary start for the World Number 9.

But from there, it was near-enough smooth sailing for 'The Heat', seeing off Keegan Brown, Niels Zonneveld, Callum Goffin and Danny Noppert by score lines of 6-2, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1 respectively. 24 legs won, only 4 conceded.

But the semi-final posed the biggest challenge of the tournament for Heta: high-flying Cameron Menzies had already knocked out Chris Dobey and James Wade in a pair of barn burner matches, and is arguably in the form of his Pro Tour career.

It came down to Menzies having a 6-5 lead in the race to 7, two crucial checkouts of 132 and 81 in the last two legs by Heta saw him through to his second final of the season, and heartbreak for Menzies, who will surely be one of the favourites to win one of the remaining PC events in 2024.

The final against Ryan Searle, who was in his fourth of the year after making the very first three back-to-back (with one win), was business as usual for Heta. Racing into a 3-0 lead, Searle soon clawed his way back into the match 3-3, before five devastating legs in a row saw Heta run out the winner of PC18 by a score of 8-3.
