The Next Possible Title Challengers For Dricus Du Plessis

Published on 28 August 2024 at 16:00

The UFC Middleweight Champion arguably earned his greatest win of his MMA career after defeating Israel Adesanya by fourth-round submission at UFC 305. After successfully defending the belt, Dricus Du Plessis has plenty of choice as to who he may face in his next title defence. Here are the fighters that could possibly challenge for the 185-pound throne.

sean strickland

Strickland has been eyeing a rematch with Du Plessis ever since he lost the title at UFC 297 by split decision. The Californian has made a very clear point and statement for another shot at UFC Gold.

The #1 Middleweight contender last fought at UFC 302 where he did beat Paulo Costa very convincingly, despite the result ending in a split decision which was more controversial at the judges than the actual fight.

Strickland became the UFC Middleweight Champion at UFC 293 where he did the same as the South African and defeated Adesanya down under, winning by unanimous decision as well as earning a knockdown in the first round.

The Anaheim-born fighter has become a fan-favourite of the UFC ever since his lead up to his first title fight as fans will be begging that he gets a deserved rematch in what could be another crazy five-round war.

winner of nassourdine imavov vs brendan allen

UFC Paris will witness an interesting Middleweight bout which could decide the next challenger for the Middleweight title as the #4 contender, Nassourdine Imavov, faces off against the #6 contender, Brendan Allen.

Imavov has already had a great year in 2024, defeating Roman Dolidze by majority decision at UFC Vegas 85 as well as stopping Jared Cannonier in the fourth-round by TKO at UFC Louisville. Hence why The Sniper has risen so high up in the division's rankings.

Allen currently stands on a seven-fight winning streak with five of those bouts ending by submission. All In's most recent fight was a very close call as he avenged one of his two losses in the UFC when he defeated Chris Curtis by split decision.

In what will most likely be a striker vs grappler matchup, both men have a significant opportunity to earn a title shot statement which could either take them further up the rankings, or make them face the King of the Middleweights.

winner of robert whittaker vs khamzat chimaev

Despite the disappointment of the fight not happening at UFC Saudi Arabia in June, Robert Whittaker will finally face Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi in what still remains to be an anticipating Middleweight battle.

Whittaker has been climbing back to a UFC title shot with some big victories this year, defeating Paulo Costa by unanimous decision at UFC 298 and Ikram Aliskerov by first-round knockout at UFC Saudi Arabia.

Chimaev has not fought since October last year when he went the distance with Kamaru Usman at UFC 294 in a Middleweight bout, defeating the former Welterweight Champion by majority decision.

Borz has brought himself a huge fan base as soon as he became a big name in the UFC and a win at UFC 308 will put him in the top three in the Middleweight rankings, although The Reaper will aim to stop that and give the #12 contender his first loss as well as planning to get revenge on Du Plessis.

alex pereira

The UFC Light Heavyweight Champion has not failed to impress in the 205-pound division as he has already defeated three former champions and a win at UFC 307 could see him go back down to Middleweight for an opportunity to become a simultaneous two-division champion.

Pereira has been on an incredible run, winning his last three fights by KO/TKO and has defeated the likes of Jan Blachowicz, Jiri Prochazka and Jamahal Hill. Poatan became the King of the Light Heavyweights after earning a second-round TKO win over Prochazka at UFC 295 in MSG.

The Brazilian has had high experience in the Middleweight division, becoming the UFC Middleweight Champion at UFC 281 when he defeated Israel Adesanya by fifth-round TKO.

If Pereira can get a successful title defence against Khalil Rountree Jr at UFC 307, it would be no surprise if we see the 205-pound champion come down a weight class to challenge Stilknocks in what would be the South African's toughest test to date.

How good do you believe Dricus Du Plessis is? Who will be the next title challenger for the UFC Middleweight Champion?
