Mexico GP: Preview 2024

This weekend we head to Sergio Perez’s hometown of Mexico and with just five races left of the season the championship title is still in play for both constructors and drivers.

Spanning over four kilometres with 71 laps in total this spectacular circuit provides one of Formula One’s most unique vistas.

Last Sunday we witnessed a Ferrari 1-2 with Charles Leclerc claiming first place after a dramatic fight between McLaren’s Lando Norris and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on the opening lap where they both left the track allowing Leclerc to drive through to first position.

Norris ultimately receiving a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, dropping him down from third to fourth and promoting Verstappen into the final podium position.

Just 57 points stand between Norris and Verstappen in the Driver standings with a maximum 146 points still available to grab. In order for Norris to overhaul the 3x world champion he will need to make an average gain of more than 11 points per race.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton will be hoping for a better performance after he was the sole retiree last weekend after spinning off the track early in the race and parking his car in the gravel.

Fans will see a familiar face in FP1 this Friday as IndyCar and McLaren reserve Pato O’Ward will be driving the MCL38 in front of his home crowd with F1 teams being required to run a young driver in two FP1 sessions per season.

Alongside, O’Ward, Mercedes’ junior Kimi Antonelli, will also be behind the wheel of an F1 car in FP1 which will be his second session of the season before he takes over for the 2025 season from Hamilton who is moving over to Ferrari.
